Leadership or Management, which one?
Leadership or Management. Which one is it?
We need to distinguish them for optimal performance.
Which world operating in so we know what tools to use.
(Specific tools will be distinguished later).
If you prefer video of this go to this YouTube video.
The videos treated the matter more rigorously and somewhat academically. Now I will relate it in my own words:
Management is when you know the outcome. You just manage for it.
For example building a house, an apartment building, or a whole subdivision:
We use Gantt charts, timelines, forecast, historical knowledge to draw upon,
improvements, more, better, different, technical skill sets, trades, known competencies, permits pulled, etc.
There might be unknown elements inside a known project. Something thatâs never been done before, and that will require leadership.
Two Examples of Leadership
I was looking for what is know about recovering a community
Like East St. Louis, IL or No. St. Louis in 63107 zip code.
Highest homicide and very high infant mortality, respectively.
I researched for examples for recovering, destitute, rundown, dysfunctional communities and found NONE.
Leadership is required for: A future that fulfills the concerns of the relevant parties, a future that wasnât going to happen anyway. A never-been-done-before, so to speak.
With leadership there is nothing that is more, better, or different from the past. Thatâs not a
created future. It is not a projection from the past to the future.
Leadership operates where there are no blueprints. From the future back to the present.
In this example “future that wasnât going to happen anyway.”
Who would be the relevant parties?
Residents, families, gang members?
Who would the stakeholders be?
Which City government officials?
Designers, social advocates, Federal government funding, investors, researchers. And there will be others uncovered along the way.
All of this is not known at all or not well known and what-ever-it-is will have to be discovered to impact the revitalization of our leadership-example neighborhood.
Example from my personal life
I created a project in a course given by in Landmark Educationâs Wisdom Division.
A project that was way bigger than who I had wound up being and it certainly seemed impossible to me
My project was to bring this technology to a country that didnât have it.
A senior leader in the Wisdom division asked
“What it would make possible if that was accomplished?”
I returned to my research and discovered deaths by self-inflicted injury by country in 2004 was high for Slavic countries. Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and almost all the twenty-four pre Soviet Russian states. I knew this technology impacts cynicism & resignation. As if by magic, I discovered the Being A Leader Course which was recently developed by the author of the Landmark Education courses.
It was so timely it was as if it was developed just for me.
I went to Ukraine and offered the Being A Leader course and promised to lower death by self inflicted injury. I led it as a full semester course for 4 years every fall semester in the top four universities in the capitol city of Kyiv and once in Almaty, Kazakhstan. See the end of this video.
This is my personal example of where Leadership was required.
My next seemingly impossible project for which there is not blueprint is to create so much value in your lives in these presentations that the demand will be so great that this Being A Leader course technology is demanded by you to be taught in every educational institution
in the world. Letâs make if really big, why not?
And for that I request your feedback. What works, what doesnât work.
Leave questions, comments, how- abouts, yeah-buts
